With the rising demand for medical education, it has been
revealed that around 2,500 seats for Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of
Surgery (MBBS) courses are expected to be added to medical institutes across
the country.
The new addition comes approved by an empowered committee
under the health department. The committee has also reportedly approved setting
up new colleges at various hospitals, as per information from the Health
Ministry. The additional seats will come up at both new as well as existing
government colleges.
As per news reports, the recent decision to raise the number
of MBBS seats will be a boon to the scores of medical education aspirants
across the country. The total number of undergraduate (UG) medical seats fell
by 1,170 during 2014-15, after the Medical Council of India (MCI) turned down
the proposal of around 3,920 seats (2,750 seats approved). The MCI decision did
not find favor among many.
According to reports, the committee has given the green
signal for 100 new seats, each for G B Pant Hospital based in Port Blair as
well as district hospitals at Almora, Churu, Datia, Dungarpur, Khandwa and
Kohima. Moreover, it has approved proposals to raise the number of seats at
existing medical colleges located in Amritsar and Patiala in Punjab as well as
Coimbatore, Kanyakumari, Madurai and Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu.
