Single entrance exam for professional courses in Karnataka may not happen this year.
Earlier there have been reports of a single entrance for
professional courses in Karnataka but now there seems to be some delay in the
process and it may not happen this year. As per reports, the process of
implementation of the Karnataka Professional Education Institutions (Regulation
of Admissions and Determination of Fee) Act, 2006 is still in its initial
stages, although it was set to be implemented in the 2015-16 academic year.
It can be recalled that once the 2006 act is implemented,
there will be a single entrance examination for admissions into medicine,
engineering and other professional courses in the state. As of now, Karnataka
Examination Authority (KEA) and Consortium of Medical, Engineering & Dental
Colleges of Karnataka (Comedk), a collective body of private managements,
conduct separate entrance tests for such courses.
Reports say that the authorities are in the process to amend
the Common Entrance Test (CET) Act.
The government has also constituted
committees for fee-fixation and admission-monitoring, which are headed by
retired judges of the high court. As per Karnataka Unaided Private Engineering
Colleges Association (KUPECA) officials, the association has submitted all the
accounts and is waiting for the fees to be fixed.
It was also mentioned that the students' unions are in
opposition to the act, stating that its implementation may result in different
fees for different colleges. Students who acquire government-quota seats may
also need to pay steep fees.
