The Common Entrance Test (CET) for admission into
engineering courses in Maharashtra may come back from 2016. It has been
reported that once the CET is restored, the state will withdraw from the Joint
Entrance Examination Main (JEE Main) system, which is conducted by the Center
to grant admission into the state engineering colleges.
It can be recalled that before 2014, Maharashtra had its own
entrance test. Over 1 lakh students, who aspire for admissions into engineering
courses in the state might have write CET. Since the application process for
JEE Main 2015 is already over, there will be no changes this year. However, CET
may come back from 2016 for engineering admissions.
According to reports, one of the main reasons of getting
back into the CET system is to bring relief to the students who need to shell
out more than Rs 2.5 lakh to private coaching institutes for JEE Main, which is
based on the syllabus designed by the Central Board of Secondary Education
(CBSE).
JEE Main is an all-India engineering entrance examination
held by the CBSE. However, once the state holds its own CET based on the state
board syllabus, it will aid students from the rural regions. Once CET is
restored, the government will continue to assign 50% weightage to Class XII
scores as well as 50% to CET scores, instead of the JEE Main.
