The Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) at Delhi University
(DU) will be put into practice from the coming academic session says the Ministry
of Human Resource Development (MHRD). As per reports, the University Grants
Commission (UGC) has requested for swift action on the implementation of CBCS
as well as the Credit Framework for Skill Development (CFSD) from the 2015
academic session.
According to reports, MHRD has also asked DU to provide
information on its preparation to implement the CBCS. DU had set up a
seven-member committee in December, 2014 to work out the modalities of
implementing the CBCS. The Academic Council of DU gave its nod to the proposal
recently. Thereafter, MHRD requested to the varsity for the details pertaining
to its preparation to implement the system. The ministry also advised that the
policy should not be implemented in a hasty or rash manner.
It was reported that CBCS is expected to be implemented in
all universities of the country, starting the 2015-16 academic year. The new
system is being implemented to bring about a merger of knowledge with expertise
in the education system of India. The system will enable students to take up a
subject of preference and migrate in a smooth fashion across different
institutes in the country through the grading system. They will be able to
learn at their own pace, take up additional courses if necessary and earn more
than the required credits.
The credit framework for skills will foster respect for
skills/vocational courses and bring such courses under mainstream higher
education. Once the system is implemented, it will bring about changes in the
education system which will help meet student aspirations as well as employment
requirements.
