Adding on the list of 13 IIMs, the new Indian Institute of
Management (IIM) at the city of Nagpur will start its first academic session
from July, 2015. According to reports, the officials of the Ministry of Human
Resource Development (MHRD) conducted site inspections for the Nagpur IIM
recently and indicated that the institute may be ready to start functioning
from this July.
It can be recalled that the city of Nagpur has been chosen
as the location to set up the proposed IIM in the state of Maharashtra. It is
the first IIM to be set up in Maharashtra. The 2015-16 academic sessions will
start with a batch of around 60 students. IIM Nagpur will start operating from
the Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT). It will be a
temporary campus, until the permanent IIM campus is fully geared.
According to reports, the permanent campus is planned at a
293-acre site in Multi-modal International Cargo Hub and Airport at Nagpur
(MIHAN), which is a Maharashtra Airport Development Corporation land at Mouza
Dahegaon in the non-SEZ area. The state government is striving to ensure that
the complete set-up for the new IIM in Mihan is ready by the year 2018, while
admissions start from the next academic session.
IIM Ahmedabad will be the mentor institute for IIM Nagpur.
The process of appointment for faculty and other officials is expected to
commence by the end of March, 2015. Six new IIMs that are planned to be
established and the other new IIMs will be set up in Himachal Pradesh, Punjab,
Bihar, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. Candidates who appeared for the Common
Admission Test 2014 (CAT 2014), which is the entrance examination for the IIMs
and other premier business schools (B-schools) in India, could also apply for
the six new IIMs.
