Studying in United Kingdom (UK) is a dream for many students
in India and reportedly British Council is offering 600 Scholarships to Indian
students this year to pursue various undergraduate (UG) or postgraduate (PG)
programs.
These programs are reportedly offered by 55 universities in
the United Kingdom (UK). The Scholarships amount to over three million pounds.
It was reported that one of the main scholarship schemes offered is the Great
Britain Scholarships (GBS). It is for Indian students aspiring to pursue UG and
PG courses in UK varsities. The fully-funded Scholarships are for one-year
programs.
The 600 Scholarships comprise two more types, namely,
Commonwealth and Chevening Scholarships. These are awarded for a wide variety
of subjects, such as, Engineering, Art and Design, Law and Business, etc.
During the past two years, the council has provided more than 750 Scholarships
to Indian students.
The Commonwealth Scholarships are awarded to students from
developing Commonwealth countries for PG, Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and
split-site PhD programs in UK varsities. It is funded by the Department for
International Development, UK. The UK government’s fully funded Chevening
Scholarships are awarded to talented professionals who are potential future
leaders, decision-makers and opinion formers. The Scholarships provide
financial support to study for a one-year Master’s degree at leading
universities of UK and is also granted for short-term programs for exceptional
mid-career professionals.
